HELP! by Sarah-Leigh Elago
Help! Help me!
Anyone! Someone!
I'm suffocating, I'm exhausted,
I'm suicidal and lethargic, Help!
He grabs me,
Pulls me in the dark, Tells me to shut up,
Help me! He slaps me, He pushes me around,
Slaps me some more and kicks me,
I scream as loud as I can, HELP!
Nobody came to my aid, No one came to my cries,
None come to my screams, H E L P M E!
He pushed me flat to the ground,
Pulls my legs apart, He pulls my dress up,
... I stopped screaming for help!
I knew, I knew I was done, I laid there like a zombie,
His sweat dropping on me,
Get it off, my inner man screamed!
Get your sweat off of me!
When he was done,
He looked at me as though he has conquered my soul,
I felt so dirty, I felt like an abomination, as though I am a terrible person, I thought, I don't deserve to live!
I told no one,
I have safely locked up that memory,
I know him, I see him,
I swear, I want him dead!
He suffocates me, Help!
I walk around with scars so deep, I smile,
Everyone around me thinks I'm strong,
That's because I lie to them,
I don't want them to see my vulnerable side.
I'm so depressed, Nobody around me can see it,
No one is interested enough to reach out to me,
I'm lonely, I am full of shame,
Somebody HELP ME!
The reflection in the mirror isn't me,
Whomever they are, is definitely NOT me,
I died the day he violated me,
I died the day he EXPLOITED me,
Love... What's that?
15 years, and STILL I remember everything like yesterday,
I may have moved passed it, but I am wounded and scared for life.
HELP ME, HELP, SOMEBODY, HELP ME LOVE MYSELF!
The above mentioned is inspired after having met two rape survivors. Their rapists are known, they see them EVERY SINGLE DAY, but since we live in a patriarchal world, NOTHING was done to their perpetrators. For a minute, I closed my eyes, and imagined the pain they must be experiencing, and came up with ' HELP!' Tonight, I salute the courageous spirit of rape survivors, I light a candle and say a little prayer for all of you. Just know that a young Afrikan Queen named Sarah-Leigh can hear your cry for help. Y'all are pretty and love is reachable to you too! The poem is dedicated to y'all!
With a grateful heart,
Madam Chair
