Am I Next? By Sarah-Leigh Elago
Hello, Am I next?
To be raped?
To be killed?
To be kidnapped?
To be trafficked?
To be physically abused?
Am I next, I asked?
Why can't you love me?
Protect me?
Cherish me?
Adore me?
Why am I next?
Because, I am female?
Because, I am "easy"?
Because, I am "weaker in physical strength"?
Or, because, I'm simply an open target?
You might be next, they said!
Don't get into an Uber alone,
Share your locations with family and friends,
Don't be too friendly, they said,
Don't walk alone... Don't, Don't, Don't...
What did I do to deserve all these horror?
All these attack?
All these terror?
All these brutality?
All these evil against me and my own-kind?
So, Now.. We can't be female?
Because, we might be next?
Next to vanish without a trace?
Next to be sex-slaved?
Next to be organ harvested?
But, Am I next?
Why am I next?
Why should I be next?
Why do I deserve to be next?
Am I next, I asked?
There are so many women wondering whether they are next. As it stands, it appears that we might all be next. Not knowing how best to bring awareness in this world were many who are supposed to care stopped caring, I hope this poem brings about the necessary awakening within humanity to realise that women deserve the same honor and respect as men, ...BECAUSE WE (WOMEN) HOLD UP THE OTHER HALF OF THE SKY...
