Life and Death by: Sarah-Leigh Elago
Just yesterday,
You were here with us,
We laughed and spoke to another,
And you said, I will call once I arrived safely.
Never once, did we thought,
You will go away from us,
In such a horrific manner,
We cried out to God, why?
You burned beyond recognition,
You, MY child, We thought to ourselves,
We didn't carry you for nine months,
Endured labour pains, ONLY for you to die like so.
When the Dr's told us,
That we were pregnant with YOU,
We were so happy,
We felt so blessed.
We watched you grow,
Watched you take your first steps,
Watched you talk, watched you dance,
Watched you smile, watched you laugh.
We took so much pride in you, child!
We had so many plans for you,
You, OUR child, were the beauty of perfection,
We loved you so so much.
We realise now, that God loved you MORE,
Ours was to be with you for a while,
UNTIL, HE was ready to have you back,
YOU were never ours, sweet child. You are and were always HIS.
AND, NOW BABY...
YOU ARE GONE,
YOU ARE NO MORE,
YOU ARE FOREVER ASLEEP.
Our son,
Our daughter,
Our uncle, aunty,
Our mother, our father, our niece, nephew and cousin. You are asleep!
Our hearts are shattered,
Our minds CANNOT comprehend your passing, child!
We cannot breath, we cannot function,
The fact that you burned beyond recognition HURTS beyond words, child!
In this hurt and pain,
Lies so much anger and resentment,
Towards life, death, God, the roads, the bus driver, the truck driver,
And everything else.
We should have, we should have,
We should have, are all that's left to say,
Your voice is silent, we are suffocating,
Child, your death has killed us too. Literally!
Oh, child! Find your rest,
Find your sleep, find your peace,
Find your path, find your light,
Find your maker!
And NOW, we identify you,
With OUR DNA, the very same thing,
That created you, the very same thing,
Thats proves we are from the same bloodline.
Child, oh OUR child,
Pray for us,
That we may recover from all this,
As parents, siblings, family, neighbors, a community and as a nation!
We wish so many things,
That can not be,
But in all things, we hope you didn't suffer much,
That God closed your eyes, before the burning fire engulfed you!
Memories are what we have of you,
Be rest assured, child,
We SHALL NEVER EVER FORGET YOU,
WE LOVED YOU, SO MUCH!
There, there now,
Find your rest baby,
This too shall pass by,
Your life has come to an end.
You sunrised,
And now, you sun set,
Omwene okwati, Oshagwana!
Yaye, Kalunga ketu. Yaye Meme Gwetu! Yaye, Omwa Gwe'Simano!
